Katori Hall’s play, The Mountaintop, explores the final night in the life of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., portraying him as a deeply human leader standing at the edge of history, knowing his mission is nearly complete. This mirrors the story of Moses, who led the Israelites to the brink of the Promised Land but did not enter it himself. On Simchat Torah, we read this part of our narrative, completing our yearly Torah reading cycle and immediately beginning again, symbolizing both fulfillment and continuity. Similarly, King, like Moses, did not see the full realization of his dream, but passed the torch to the next generations. On Simchat Torah, as we rejoice in the ongoing cycle of Torah and leadership, we are reminded that the work of justice, like the Torah, is eternal and carried forward by many hands.
