By the Waters of Babylon: Exilic Yearnings, Past & Present

with Rabbi Or Rose

Psalm 137, an ancient heart-rending poem of lament, is recited by Jewish communities around the world on the 9th of Av and in advance of this historic day of national mourning.

Join us as we explore this time-honored text and several evocative religious and cultural commentaries—musical, poetic, and visual—on it.

How do these ancient, medieval, and modern voices engage the subjects of exile, memory, rage, and possible redemption? What are the points of continuity and rupture?

How might a dialogue with these sources help us in our own search for meaning and purpose during this liturgical season and in our broader lives?

Rabbi Or Rose, a proud member of TBZ, is founding g director of the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership of Hebrew College. He is currently editing The Book of Psalms Here & Now: A Multifaith Commentary (Paraclete Press, 2023).
