Seeking Refuge in a World of Uncertainty: Psalm 27 & the Jewish Fall Holiday Cycle

Since the middle of the 18th-century, many Jews have adopted the custom of reciting Psalm 27 beginning one month in advance of Rosh Hashanah through the end of Sukkot.

Why was this psalm selected for this sacred season?

How has this ancient prayer-poem been interpreted by scholars, musicians, poets, and visual artists?

How might we make use of the biblical text and creative works it has inspired as we journey through the Days of Awe and the turning of the season?

Rabbi Or Rose is the founding director of the Miller Center of Hebrew College and a proud member of TBZ. He is currently working on editing The Book of Psalms Here & Now: A Contemporary Multifaith Commentary (Paraclete Press, 2023).
