SUMMARY:TBZ Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The TBZ Book Club provides a setting in which TBZ members come
together to discuss fiction and non-fiction books with Jewish themes. Mont
hly meetings on Sunday evenings at TBZ feature lively discussions of books
by or about Jewish people\, alternating fiction and non-fiction selection
 s. You may find yourself reading books you never knew about or thought to
read and meeting other book lovers! Please join us at any time during the
year by contacting the Coordinator at tbzbookclub@tbzbrookline.org\n\nApri
 l 9 - I.L. Peretz Reader by I.L.Peretz (author) and Ruth Wisse (editor) (
 F) (Discussion facilitated by Judith)\n\nThis second volume in the Librar
y of Yiddish Classics series includes 26 familiar stories by the master st
oryteller and social critic (1852-1915)\; most of them benefit from new tr
anslations. Peretz was a giant of Yiddish literature who advocated a radic
al shift from religious observance (especially the mysticism of Hasidism)
to the rationalism of scientific progress and secular Jewish culture. But
he could not escape his roots entirely\; in his writings as in his life\,
he shows affection for his co-religionists. In ``If Not Higher\,'' a skept
ic comes to believe that a humble Hasidic rebbe is worthy of sainthood. In
``Venus and Shulamith'' Peretz extols the virtuous maiden of the Song of
Songs over the licentious Venus of Greek mythology\, demonstrating his mas
tery of both biblical texts and classical literature. Two major entries--`
 `My Memoirs'' and the vignettes titled ``Impressions of a Journey''--are h
ere in their first unabridged English translation. The former is a vivid p
ortrait of growing up orthodox in mid-19th century Poland. Each vignette i
n ``Journey'' is a story in itself: Peretz depicts grinding poverty side b
y side with belief in miracles\, and demonstrates a stoic acceptance of li
fe's realities. His works stand in brilliantly evocative tribute to a bygo
ne era.\n\nUpcoming Meeting Date: May 14
