SUMMARY:Kiddush Talk: Playing Favorites: God\, Parents and Children in the
Book of Genesis with Joe Reimer (in person)
DESCRIPTION:There is a sign in front of a local church that reads: “God l
oves everyone. No exceptions.”\nThat noble sentiment accords with my bel
iefs but blatantly conflicts with my studies of the\nBook of Genesis. The
God of Genesis plays favorites and chooses one brother over others in\neve
ry generation from Cain and Abel to Joseph and his brothers. While Genesis
honestly\ndepicts the human disasters that result from this favoritism\,
the authors also view chosenness\nas essential to the divine plan. Why is
that their view? Why do they view God and parents as\nchoosing some childr
en over others? How are we to read these stories and make sense of what th
 ey have to teach us?
