Getting Started
An essential tool for finding job listings is the free service, LinkedIn. LinkedIn maintains a network of contacts that is geared primarily to business connections. Jobs are then listed by how many links there are to the job poster.
Here’s the best way to use LinkedIn:
- Go to LinkedIn and CLICK on the "Join Today" button on the bottom of the page.
- Fill in the form to create a LinkedIn account.
- Once you are logged in to LinkedIn, CLICK on the "My Profile" tab at the top of the screen.
- Fill out your profile. My suggestion is to take information directly from your resume. Others who may find you will see your profile, so give them the sense of who you are. Pay particular attention to your previous employers.
- Now you need contacts. First, CLICK on the "My Contacts" tab at the top of the screen.
- Next, CLICK on the "Colleagues" button below and to the left of the "My Contacts" tab.
- CLICK on the "Find Current Colleagues" button in the middle of the page. This will search the LinkedIn database for others who worked at the same companies as you. Scroll through the lists and "Invite" them to join your network.
- Explore the Website. You can "invite" specific people to join your network, you can search for people at different companies; you can request introductions to others who work at specific companies; and you can find job postings listed by friends of friends of friends.
Help Wanted Listings
Whether or not you take full advantage of LinkedIn, consider using their "Find Jobs" tab at the top of the screen, or use the link above. Enter keywords for the jobs you desire, your zip code, and you will search two sources (I leave the "job function" blank). First, the internal LinkedIn database of jobs posted specifically to LinkedIn; second, you’ll search through a service called "Simply Hired."
Simply Hired automatically searches a huge number of individual job posting databases for jobs in your area. Some of the databases are: BostonWorks, Monster, YahooJobs, Dice, ComputerJobs.com, University of Texas, Geebo, College Recruiter.com, and many more that you’ve never heard of. The results are listed and can be sorted by date of posting, by company, or by job title. You can search the same databases on the SimplyHired Website, but the list on LinkedIn is better formatted.
Services for Job Seekers
Jewish Vocational Service, located downtown, has a group called "Career Moves" which provides seminars, resume services, and the great "Success Groups." A success group is a small group of people who meet every week for a period of time and make commitments to each other related to their job search. It helps provide structure and a support group that often lasts beyond the formal group meetings.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts provides "One Stop" Employment Centers that provide all kinds of services to residents. You can just drop in and check it out.
