Gloria and Irwin Pless, Continuity
Gloria Pless writes: "When Beverly asked me to do a square, I initially demurred, saying that I was not artistic. She asked me what meaning the shul has for me, and I immediately said, 'continuity.' She said, okay, do a quilt square with that theme. So, since I like Beverly, I said yes, and we discussed some ideas. It did not take long for a very simple square to emerge as I left the artistry to the creative participants. I feel a shul can only survive if, as it evolves, it brings the past into the present and then into the future. Most of the names of the rabbis and the presidents on my square are not known to me or others, but their beliefs and spirituality were built into the fabric of the tangible and intangible at Temple Beth Zion. This provided the support upon which the present-day community flourishes and continues. Surrounding the square of the continuous chain of rabbis and presidents is the lush flora symbolizing Beverly's garden - the very epitomy of life going from the past and present and on into the future."
About the Artist. "I am a middle-aged woman, work for an educational institution, am a homemaker and gardener, and was a past officer of Temple Beth Zion."
